With the continuous expansion of the energy storage landscape and the synergistic development of a full-scope ecosystem energy storage framework, the Qingyuan Qingcheng District Baimiao site independent energy storage power station (hereinafter referred to as the “Qingyuan Baimiao Independent Energy Storage Project”) has officially entered full commercial operation.

The project consists of three phases, with a total installed capacity of 508MW/1016MWh. It is a key new-type energy storage project in Guangdong Province, and also the province’s first GWh-level independent energy storage station, as well as the largest operational project of its kind.

The Qingyuan Baimiao Independent Energy Storage Project is invested, constructed, and operated across the full lifecycle by Xidu (Guangdong) Electric Power Investment Co., Ltd., a controlling subsidiary of Guangzhou Zhiguang Electric Co., Ltd.

Integrated Development and Efficient Resource Utilization

Phases I, II, and III are co-located and developed in an integrated manner, with unified operational coordination. The project is connected to the grid via the existing 220kV Zhijiaocheng substation, fully leveraging existing land resources and transmission corridors to achieve efficient and intensive capacity expansion.

As a benchmark grid-side energy storage site in South China, the project significantly enhances regional energy storage coordination capabilities and fills the gap of large-scale storage hubs in northern Guangdong. It sets a model for the scaled and clustered development of new energy storage in the province, while providing strong support for flexible regulation of the northern Guangdong power grid and local wind and solar energy consumption, helping build a more stable, efficient, and flexible modern power system.

Advanced Technology with Cascade High-Voltage Architecture

All three phases are equipped with Zhiguang Electric’s independently developed 35kV cascade high-voltage direct-connected liquid-cooled energy storage system with full intellectual property rights. The system achieves a comprehensive operational efficiency exceeding 90%, improving by 6–10% compared with conventional low-voltage string-based solutions.

The high-voltage direct-connected architecture significantly reduces footprint and improves land utilization efficiency. The full lifecycle grid-connected energy output is increased by 23% compared with traditional solutions. The system offers advantages of high safety, high efficiency, low cost, and long service life, making it a landmark application for large-scale deployment of 35kV cascade high-voltage liquid-cooled energy storage systems in China.

Multi-Functional Grid Support Capability

At present, the Qingyuan Baimiao Independent Energy Storage Project fully supports four core functions: grid frequency regulation, peak shaving, emergency backup, and renewable energy consumption.

With millisecond-level dynamic response capability, the project precisely stabilizes grid frequency fluctuations and mitigates intermittent disturbances from wind and solar generation. During peak demand periods, it releases stored energy to alleviate electricity supply pressure for industrial, commercial, and residential users. During off-peak periods, it absorbs surplus electricity, effectively improving local renewable energy consumption and strengthening grid stability in northern Guangdong.

Proven Market Performance and Future Expansion

Previously, Phase I of the project has been steadily participating in Guangdong’s ancillary services market for an extended period and has become a benchmark AGC frequency regulation energy storage station in the province, demonstrating strong commercial operation performance.

In the future, the project will fully unlock the regulation potential of the entire site, maximizing both the operational and market value of this ultra-large-scale energy storage facility, and supporting the development of Guangdong’s electricity marketization reform.

Advancing New Power System Development

As China accelerates the construction of a new-type power system and deepens the integration of source-grid-load-storage systems, independent energy storage is increasingly recognized as a critical flexible grid resource with growing strategic importance.

Guangzhou Zhiguang Electric Co., Ltd. will continue to advance and upgrade its technological portfolio, including cascade high-voltage direct-connected energy storage and grid-forming energy storage systems. Leveraging its full industrial chain capabilities, the company will contribute “Zhiguang strength” to the large-scale development of new energy storage, regional energy transition, and the realization of China’s “dual carbon” goals.
